You may think a bulging disc is the same as a herniated disc, but there is a difference. With a herniated disc, a crack occurs in the outer layer of the disc, called the annulus. The crack usually affects a small part of the disc, and it allows the soft inner material of the nucleus pulposus to rupture out of the disc. A bulging disc is different because the disc simply bulges outside the space it normally occupies between your vertebrae, but it doesn't rupture. A bulging disc affects a much larger part of the disc than a herniated disc. While it is more common to have a bulging disc than a herniated disc, a herniated disc is more likely to be painful. It's possible for you to have a bulging disc without feeling any pain at all.

A bulging disc develops when a vertebral disc bulges into the spinal canal, sometimes compressing a nerve in the process. Often referred to as a "herniated disk," bulging disks are technically a different and less severe condition. [1] [2] Disc bulges occur naturally during the aging process. Many people have disc bulges in their cervical (neck) spine and never have symptoms or require treatment. A painful cervical disc bulge can be treated at home and by a doctor in a number of ways. It often takes time, changes in activities and exercises to heal it properly. Occasionally, surgery is also necessary. [3]

I have just read your item on Bulging Discs. You have put my mind at ease. I am 66yrs and have had this terrible problem now for about 4/5 months. I have been having Western Accupuncture for the past 5 weeks and I don’t think it is any better. The needling was so painful. Sometimes I have no pain until I stand then I get the pins and needles and bad pain in my right leg and shin and not as bad but some in my left shin. I have sat a lot in the past, more so since I lost my husband 4 years ago and I semi retired. I will re- read your article and follow your suggestions to try ease my pain. I have been going twice a week to physio and I cannot afford this at $69 a session. Thank you again, I feel so much better knowing that this is not a permanent thing, although it has felt like it. Have a great day – Sharyn

i agree this site should not be removed. This is very helpful to me because I have sever facial pain due to 24/7 aggressive involunatry movement in my face. I’ve been to at least 15 specialists, including neurosurgeons, neurologists, pain management, ENT, etc… No one knows nor understand this is happening so all brushed me off. I just had an MRI of the neck and it shows budging discs at C3 to C7 and T1 and cervical canal stenosis. I didn’t even know I have neck problem because the severe 24/7 facial pain has been consuming all my energy. I’m going to book an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon so he can review my MRI to see if there’s a correlation between my facial pain and the neck issue.
